“In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.”

In the wake of recent revelations about the National Security Agency’s (NSA) program of mass surveillance directed at all American citizens, Edward Snowden, the alleged leaker of the documents proving the government’s misdeeds, is being hailed as a hero by some, a traitor and criminal by others, while some simply don’t know what to think.
Here’s what I think: Snowden and the countless others like him who are daring to stand up to the government machine are acting as the moral conscience for a nation that has lost its way.

Troops 'targeted by NSA for anti-Obama views'

The NSA is systematically monitoring the Internet posts and telephone conversations of U.S. military returning from Afghanistan, according to a civil-liberties attorney.
“The FBI and the Secret Service are showing up to request an interview to question specific Internet posts the veteran has placed on websites such as Facebook,” explained attorney John Whitehead, founder of the Rutherford Institute.
Whitehead said the agencies are looking for “anti-Obama views that can be interpreted to reflect psychological problems of sufficient seriousness to disqualify the veteran from ever owning a firearm.”
Whitehead told WND credible sources within the National Security Agency have told him the NSA is downloading 1 trillion communications on the Internet per month, including posts to various websites, emails, instant message communications and texting messages.

Edward Snowden NSA Scandal: Why We Need a Whistleblower Protection Program

http://libertycrier.com/government/edward-snowden-nsa-scandal-why-we-need-a-whistleblower-protection-program/?utm_source=The+Liberty+Crier&utm_campaign=138bd3944a-The_Liberty_Crier_Daily_News_6_12_2013&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_600843dec4-138bd3944a-284758921

Edward Snowden, the hero responsible for the biggest intelligence leak in NSA history, is the latest whistleblower to reveal what a threat the U.S.government is to individual liberty and the rule of law. His stand against an empire with unprecedented powers of surveillance and secrecy also highlights the invaluable role whistleblowers have played and will continue to play in exposing government abuse and how to encourage this and other acts of civil disobedience.
In several days of interviews with The Guardian, Snowden explained why he decided to quit his comfortable job and life in Hawaii to knowingly make himself the number one target of the U.S. government. “I’m willing to sacrifice all of that because I can’t in good conscience allow the U.S. government to destroy privacy, internet freedom and basic liberties for people around the world with this massive surveillance machine they’re secretly building,” Snowden confessed. Even if he is made to suffer, it is worth it if the “federation of secret law” is revealed and exposed.

Rand Paul: We Fought a Revolution Over Behavior Like the NSA's

These activities violate the Fourth Amendment, which says warrants must be specific—"particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized." And what is the government doing with these records? The president assures us that the government is simply monitoring the origin and length of phone calls, not eavesdropping on their contents. Is this administration seriously asking us to trust the same government that admittedly targets political dissidents through the Internal Revenue Service and journalists through the Justice Department?

No one objects to balancing security against liberty. No one objects to seeking warrants for targeted monitoring based on probable cause. We've always done this.

What is objectionable is a system in which government has unlimited and privileged access to the details of our private affairs, and citizens are simply supposed to trust that there won't be any abuse of power. This is an absurd expectation. Americans should trust the National Security Agency as much as they do the IRS and Justice Department.

Towards the end of an outspoken 24 hours ofmedia appearances, former Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) appeared via phone on Fox Business Network withMelissa Francis and made a bold prediction about NSA leaker Edward Snowden‘s future. “I’m worried about somebody in our government who might kill him, with a cruise missile or a drone missile.”
“We live in a bad time where American citizens don’t even have rights and that they can be killed,” Paul continued. “But the gentleman is trying to tell the truth about what’s going on, he is not defecting, there’s no signs of that happening. It’s a shame we’re in an age where people who tell the truth about what the government is doing gets into trouble.”
