The meme is a movement. The Government in Ottawa is facing a separatist movement of unimaginable proportions -- every bit as serious as the Secession of the Confederate States of America.
The Western States of Canada produce around 70% of the actual income of the country, but receive only about 30% of reinvestment money. This means that they struggle to develop the resources they have and struggle to create jobs, railroads, ports, and other social and infrastructure support they need.
From a bigger picture view, Western Canada's security is important to the security of The United States, too. The United States has de facto been forced to defend Western Canada in order to protect its own western States and close the gap between Alaska and the Lower 48. The United States has also provided the bulk of the market and transport for Western Canadian export products.
So, in effect, the Western Provinces are functioning like Territorial States right now.
It becomes important for Canadians, and Americans in general, to recognize that the Territorial Administrative States in the western United States have changed into full-fledged States of the Union over the past five years.
The change to being a "State" franchise of the United States of America, Incorporated --- such as "the State of Alberta, Inc." operating in the International Jurisdiction of Sea, is not the same thing as Alberta, the unincorporated physically-defined State that progresses through Territorial status to become a State of the Union under the provisions of the Northwest Ordinance.
Can people living in one of the Western Canadian Provinces apply to become a Territorial "State" --- yes, but they should know that the true goal and purpose of accepting Territorial status is to become a State of the Union and acquire ownership of their land and soil jurisdiction, too.
As all the Western Canadian Provinces are sufficiently populated and have enough infrastructure to qualify as States of the Union, the process of becoming a State of the Union is simply a matter of the existing States of the Union voting to accept a new member State under the Equal Footing Doctrine and enrolling them as such.
The Big Change that this implies is that the Western Canadian Provinces and their people will no longer be considered trust property of the British Crown and the Canadians will no longer be British Subjects.
Their Law will become American Common Law, American Land Law, and American Admiralty Law. They will have no automatically assumed allegiance to Britain or its Monarchs. Their national capitol will no longer be Ottawa, it will be Philadelphia. Everything will change.
This seems like a time for big changes and that's okay; there are plenty of Territorial Administrative States in this country already grappling with the change to becoming actual States of the Union --- what's a few more confused souls jumping on board?
We only bring attention to this matter, as we believe that the Canadians deserve to know the full scope of the change they are anticipating--- it's not going to be just a matter of opening up a new franchise corporation and switching from Dairy Queen to Tastee-Freeze.
They may continue to sell soft serve ice cream, but the change will go deeper than branding, and beyond brands at all. As the full transition takes hold, and each former Province is enrolled as a State of the Union, they will gain their own land and soil and become what are known as "complete states" --- able to own and operate their own land and soil, sea, freshwater, and air jurisdiction.
This is a status of full political and practical sovereignty, what is called "nation-state sovereignty" for the people living in each one of these States of the Union. They will take their nationality from their State and be known as Albertans, Saskatsawanans, Manitobans, and so on.
They may continue to think of themselves as "Canadians" but inevitably, they will begin to think of themselves in more general terms as "Americans" similar to what has happened with people in South America who also call themselves "Americans".
It's important that the Canadians have full disclosure and aren't sold a pig in a poke ----or a franchise that comes with something much bigger and bolder attached. Those who have a deep attachment to the British Monarchy, especially, have to be told that the familiar tyrannical Nanny State will not give rise to a more practical and adept Nanny. What they are walking into is a full-blown challenge to self-govern within a framework of independent nation-states that are aligned and which share mutual powers for their mutual benefit, but otherwise manage their own affairs.
There will be no Ottawa and no Washington DC government to roll up all the profit from the former provinces and dole back out whatever they see fit; rather, the former provinces will have to support the Federation of States and whatever federal subcontractors make the grade and directly approve budgets in support of the "federal" entities.
Read that: The Territorial Government won't be here to steal all the money and credit the State produces, but in the same stroke, won't be here like Daddy Warbucks to dole out "federal block grants" and "aid to disabled persons". Each State is in control of its own assets and becomes much more responsible for itself and its people.
This provides great motivation and growth potential for resource-rich states and states with large populations, but it takes more than wishful thinking to clean up and breathe life back into the Rust Belt, or solve the tension between urban and rural populations.
So -- if the Western Canadian provinces want to become States instead, we say welcome along --- just be aware of what kind of "statehood" they will try to foist off on you, and the greater prize -- and greater responsibility that lies ahead.
