How many of you remember the children's song, "Do Your Ears Hang Low?" ---
Remember this line--- "Do your ears hang low? Do they wobble to and fro? Can
you throw them over your shoulder like a Continental Soldier?....."
This song dates from Revolutionary War times. Although it sounds silly and
children still delight in it, the "ears" the rowdy Colonists were talking about
weren't attached to their heads, and the song was regularly sung by those same
Continental Soldiers on the march--- similar to the Marines singing "Sound Off!"
as they march.
As the song makes very clear, there were soldiers called "Continental
Soldiers" -- and it is also clear that they were the American soldiers fighting
in the Revolutionary War. What other "Continental Soldiers" have you ever heard
of?
