The Church and I

 By Anna Von Reitz

To begin with, I was born and raised and have never been a part of any church other than Evangelical Lutheran. Since my discovery that they are operating as an incorporated "church" and selling baptismal certificates like all the other incorporated "churches", I have severed my relationship with them.
Any organization that pretends to be a church and which engages in the purported buying and selling of souls, is not a church. It's a fake and in league with the Father of All Lies by definition. Despite whatever good work it does and whatever worthy service such an organization might render, it is tainted by this fraud and breach of trust in a fundamental way that can't be answered or altered short of a massive reform and repentance.
So I have turned away even from my own church and sought the narrow road.
My husband has done the same.
My son recently asked me, "Mom, among them all, which church is least crazy and dishonest?"
I replied, "The one inside your heart."
What else can you say, when you have caught them red-handed, buying, selling, and trading Baptismal Certificates as clearinghouse certificates?
And this criminal corruption submitting to Mammon is being practiced not only by the Roman Catholic Church, but all the incorporated Protestant churches, as well?
There's a single piece of paper being spread all over the Internet -- again -- a piece of paper copied from my own book, Disclosure 101, which details the history leading up to me "going public" with this whole effort. The paper shows my whole given name, and my capacity at that time while acting as a "private attorney" for Pope Benedict XVI. The entire circumstance is explained in the book.
By 2006, we had concluded that the Pope was uniquely responsible for the corruption--- what we call "The Mess" ---so we hiked up our skirts and sued the Holy See for redress of Breach of Trust.
Pope Benedict XVI heard us out, investigated, and took immediate action to correct. He asked for our help and we took on the task of issuing Due Process notification to his erring employees. It's in that capacity and while doing that work that I acted as his private attorney. This work went on from 2006 to 2014, ending in the Final Judgment issued in April of that year.
You can read about all of this and see related documents and eleven pages of foundational law and legal citations in the book.
Meantime, Pope Benedict had been "retired" and a new Pope chosen.
Other than circling the wagons and protecting the Church and its interests, Pope Francis has made no substantial effort to correct or assist us. He is, apparently, bent on using the United Nations as a new storefront for the same old criminality.
Day before yesterday, Francis gave a frantic call to put "teeth" into the United Nations.
We interpret that as meaning--- give the United Nations money to become a separate, globe-spanning, oppressive military power under his command. Circle the wagons. Defend the crime syndicate with force of arms.
This puts the Jesuit Order, Francis's own Order, into a very tight place.
The recent Peter's Pence Scandal adequately demonstrates how entrenched the criminality within the Roman Catholic Church really is.
Faithful Catholics were asked to make a one-time special offering on June 15th, to provide the Pope with a special fund to alleviate the suffering of those left homeless by war and those suffering from disease and political oppression and natural disasters.
They, the Catholic Parishioners worldwide, gave half a billion dollars, so that Francis would have pocket change to alleviate suffering directly.
Instead of doing so, he and his assistants invested the money in things like luxury condos and Hollywood movies and new bank buildings in the Inner City of London.
Enough said.
We sued for redress because the Pope is in a unique position of responsibility. Popes created The Mess, so Popes can sustain or destroy The Mess, at will.
It would be easier for the Pope to repent and lead the world out of this morass as Pope Benedict XVI attempted to do, than it would be for all the rest of us to rebuild a new world from scratch.
Unfortunately, the pitched battle between the teachings of Jesus versus the siren song of Mammon has led to a prolongation of money and power-mongering both within and without the Roman Catholic Church.
And that struggle is ongoing still.
It is, in truth and in fact, a spiritual war between the Spirit of Truth and the Spirit of Untruth, between the natural world and the world of corporations, between the True God and Mammon.

Fortunately, we don't have to rely upon our own strength to win. This is a fight that our God will win. All we have to do is keep the faith and stay calm and hopeful and watchful, for the day is coming and the night must pass away.

For the Whiners and Nay-Sayers

 By Anna Von Reitz

I occasionally get letters or emails, especially from ex-service members who are pooh-poohing my information and who continue claiming that there is only one constitution long after we have proven otherwise and have in fact delivered all the information necessary to find and read (4) four different constitutions issued in 1787, 1789, 1790 and 1868.

These men are obnoxious-- and useless to our cause-- because they are in denial.  The facts run counter to their indoctrination.  It's not like what Mrs. Smith taught them in Eighth Grade U.S. History and by golly, they aren't going to bother themselves to investigate or think of anything beyond that starting point.

In retrospect, if they ever get to retrospect, they will realize that what "Mrs. Smith" told them was true --- but incomplete, and that sin by omission left them with the wrong impression and led them to make wrong assumptions about what has gone on in this country and what our true history is.

As for me, I find myself replying repeatedly to these semi-somnolent types, who pretend that I have made claims and then failed to back them up--- so here is my reply to one of them, for all of them:

"________ [insert name], just give up and stop pretending that I have not "given" you the documents. I have given you the names and dates of the documents and told you where you can procure your own copies.   I don't owe it to you or anyone else to go out and obtain copies and send them to you.  You are a Big Boy and you can find your way to a bookstore and a library all by yourself.

Then, it is up to you to read, read, read, and begin to ask questions about what you read as other more acute readers all over this country are already doing.  Here's a recent example from one of my readers, a woman who is engaged in precisely the same task you need to do.  She wrote:

"I have noticed in several places in the Constitution where the word citizen was spelled with a capital C. Such as in,  " Article I, Section 2. ....No Person shall be a Representative who shall not have attained to the Age of twenty-five Years, and been seven Years a Citizen of the United States.", " Section 3. ...No Person shall be a Senator who shall not have attained to the Age of Thirty Years, and been nine Years a Citizen of the United States,..." . So, it goes through to Article VII of the Constitution of the United States.  Then we have the Bill of Rights.  " Article XI,  ...against one of the United States by Citizens of another State, or by Citizens or Subject of any foreign State."

Then we come to " Article XIV, Section 1. All persons born or naturalized in the United states, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."  From this point on the word 'citizen' is spelled with a small 'c'...."

This is the kind of close reading that is necessary, and once you have noticed things like this, you need to learn the difference between a capital "C" Citizen and a small "c" citizen--- and many other things, too.  You need to think about what you are seeing and figure it out, like a puzzle.  You can do this for yourself by reading law and history and the treaties that preceded the Constitutions, or you can take my word for it ---- and I could care less which path you choose.

But you can jolly well stop pretending that I haven't "delivered".   I have given you far more to start with than anyone ever gave me."

Thank you, very much.

I feel very confident that our Team has ferreted out the main points and the substantial evidence and facts, and those crucial elements are firmly established and self-evident in the Public Records, without any recourse to secret archives or arcane knowledge.  Our history is hidden in plain sight, there for everyone to read for her or himself.

I also feel confident that though we may have gotten some small things wrong, we've got the Big Story nailed down tight.

There are four (4) Constitutions (one of them. in 1868, faking it as a corporate charter) in evidence, and since 1937, there is also a "Declaration of Interdependence of the Governments in The United States".

These documents tell the tale -- if you take the time to read and think about them and place them in their historical context -- far better than I can.  I encourage everyone to obtain their own copies, and dust off their spectacles:

(1) The Constitution for the united States of America (1787)
(2) The Constitution of the United States of America (1789)
(3) The Constitution of the United States (1790)
(4) The Constitution of the United States of America [Incorporated] (1868)
(5) The Declaration of Interdependence of the Governments in The United States (1937)

Don't think that you will be able to rightly interpret things without context and historical research and real effort --- that's what it took for the rest of us and you will be no different; but, if you want to know what happened to your country, and to be sure of it and to know that it's true---- read carefully.

To Oregon's "Independent" Jural Assembly and All Others

 By Anna Von Reitz

By definition, there is one (1) Oregon Assembly, made up of all the people who live inside the State borders.  [It's the same way in all other States.]

The only way you are NOT part of The Oregon Assembly is by "voluntarily" adopting a different political status as a Federal U.S. Citizen or citizen of the United States --- unfortunately, these foreign political statuses, both, have been "conferred upon" you since a few days or weeks after your birth--- and unless and until you object to that and reclaim your birthright political status as an Oregonian, you are legally presumed to be a foreigner in your own country.

Reclaiming your birthright requires you to make specific "declarations" about who you are and where you come from, etc. --- and record all that properly with a land recording office.  We used to do it (and people still can) by recording via a State of State Land Recording Office, but we have also opened up our own new block-chained Land Recording System.

Doing the paperwork is easy now.  Learning who you are and how your actual government works is a harder task.  Once you and your fellows figure out where the "Jural Assembly" fits in the whole process and function of a State Assembly, you'll be able to plug your puzzle piece into the whole and everyone concerned will be happier and more effective.

You are right that the civilian courts are a key component, necessary for Americans to be free and safe again, and right that the Oregon Jural Assembly has a crucial job to do.  What you are not seeing is that the Jural Assembly is, again, by definition, part of the larger framework of The Oregon Assembly.

Each State Assembly has four principal jobs or functions --- (1) As a General Assembly, it addresses issues within the State Borders; (2) As a Business Assembly (sometimes called an International Assembly) the State Citizens who are members of the State Assembly decide international/interstate issues; (3) the Jural Assembly which is composed of Assembly Members sets up and oversees the civilian courts, organizes and oversees elections, etc., and (4) the State Assembly Militia is the "well-regulated" militia that each State is guaranteed --- and it is the peacekeeping and emergency response force responsible for protecting the people of your State from foreign invasion and natural disasters.

Our entire country is supposed to "self-govern" and it is a lot of work, but if we want to be free, and if we value our birthright as Americans, we have to do it.

The Real Reason Bessie is a "Wonder Car"

 By Anna Von Reitz

All kidding from my husband and sons about my Ford "Exploder" not exploding aside, and even putting aside all the many adventures and challenges that Bessie and I have shared together, there is a deeper meaning to the little phrase "Wonder Car".

Bessie will be thirty years old in 2021.  She, like her owner, has been semi-retired for about ten years.  Somehow, when her second motor hit 150,000 miles (that was 516,000 miles lifetime for her at that point) I felt it was time for Bessie to have light duty--- not because she was not performing, but more in the spirit of giving an old horse some Golden Years and not having to work so hard.

During her actual working years, Bessie climbed mountains, forded rivers, and ate potholes the size of Denver.  Since her semi-retirement, she has kept her wheels on actual pavement.  Ironically, this is when her secret life as a true Wonder Car began.

My friend, "Cathy", had suffered for years as an abused wife living far out in the country.  Her husband was good to her when he was sober, but as the years went by, his addiction to alcohol worsened and when he was drinking, he turned mean.  He took a shovel to her and nearly killed her a couple months before she turned fifty ---and then she found out she was suffering from cancer.

There she was, getting older, alone except for a drunk who beat her, stuck forty miles from nowhere, fighting cancer. And no way out. To say her life and prognosis was grim, would be an understatement.

But love walked through the door when I came to her house that September, and spirited her away in an old Ford Explorer just before the winter weather closed down.  Bessie was her car, enabling her to break free from her abusive husband, getting her back and forth to her doctor appointments, hauling home the groceries, and even giving her some fun -- trips to see her nieces and nephews.

A year later, she was cancer-free and beginning a new life. She got a job and her own newer car.  She returned Bessie to me with a smile and a "pat" on the old car's hood as she walked away.  Good things have continued to happen in her life.  Two years ago, she remarried and is living her dream life.

She always gives me this wide-eyed look of amazement and squeezes my hand hard enough to hurt, shakes her head and whispers, "How did this happen?"

God happened. Friends happened. Her own will to live and to have a good life happened.

Over the years, Bessie has been part of a continuing saga of such "minor miracles", making vital transportation and carrying capacity available to people who desperately need it.

Right now, she has patch tape over her broken side light (transparent orange see-through tape) and is chugging along waiting for her new windshield, serving as a work truck for a young --by my standards--  plumber/heating technician.

He's a single father of four--- and that is already tough enough to manage, but last month he fell off a roof and injured his back.

He had been making do with a little subcompact car, but wearing a back brace meant that he could no longer drive that to get himself to and from his hospital visits, or to his worksites where he has continued to supervise jobs despite stiffness and pain.  Friends had to take him everywhere, and at night he fretted--- what if one of the kids got sick?

Enter Bessie, the Wonder Truck.  He can drive again, because Bessie is big enough to allow him to sit up in his back brace.  And she can easily carry the bags of tools and saws and pipe to worksites.  It's a whole new picture for him. His life is back.  And it's because I loaned him an almost-thirty year-old Ford Explorer.

He doesn't care that her side light is taped or that her windshield still needs to be replaced. There were tears in his eyes as I gave him the keys.  Bessie is working her magic again-- by making things possible that were impossible before. Gently, with her patient and indomitable spirit, that little SUV is still on the road, changing lives for the better.

And that, above all else, is why Bessie is a Wonder Car. I am not the only one who loves her, and not the only one she has saved.  When one of my Readers found the phantom Fuel Pressure Regulator Return Hose and sent it to me, he gave her a new lease on life--- and also gave new life to an Iraqi War Veteran who can now independently care for himself and his four children again.

In between her duty stations away from home, Bessie delivers meals to the poor, the sick, and the elderly.  She hauls food for the food bank, takes people back and forth to their medical and dental appointments, and hauls construction supplies.  Bessie has helped rebuild homes damaged by earthquakes, access ramps for wheelchairs, and much, much more.

My husband calls Bessie a "Community Car" because she has had such a vital role in so many lives.  I am her owner/caretaker, the one who pays for her insurance and upkeep, polishes her chrome and dusts her floorboards, but I have come to think that Bessie has a car-soul and destiny of her own. There is something above and beyond me that has kept a certain little SUV safe from all the perils of Alaska.

This afternoon, her windshield will be replaced and her new headlights are on the way.  It won't be long before Bessie is back in trim and ready for another winter. God bless and keep her.  She really is a "Wonder Car".  I am sending my heart-felt thanks to all of you who have cared about her and thought about my repair dilemma, and helped to get the Old Girl back on track.

It means a lot, yes, more than anyone who thinks that she is "just an old car" can ever know.

Liars, Cheats, and Honest Men

 By Anna Von Reitz

Honest men admit painful truths. They don't bother to lie about anything, no matter what it is. They are liable unto themselves to confess the truth, and they know it.
So, they just take it on the snout, admit their sins, confess, and let it all hang out. They do this, because they know that: (1) lies always come out of the closet eventually, and, (2) the truth is already known.
The truth is known to them and known to God, and it's only a matter of time until it is known to everyone else.
That's why they don't bother to evade the truth: it isn't practical to do so.
Honest men are aware that there is a time delay between many of our actions and their effects. The lie you tell today and its evils, whatever they are, may not bear fruit today or tomorrow, next year or even ten years from now, but lies will always yield their harvest.
Just like rain falls. Just like carrot seeds result in carrots.
Honest men also know the Source of all lies --- the Spirit of Falsehood, Satan. So why let such a demon enter into one's thoughts and mouth and mind? A lie is like a poisoned sweet roll. It may taste good, but it will make you sick.
My point is that this scrupulous devotion to the truth is a matter of practicality and maturity. Wise men value the truth, for many reasons, but the bottom line is that lies don't ultimately work.
Cheats lie by omission. They don't actually tell whoppers. They just omit vital information and let people draw wrong conclusions as a result. We have plenty of examples of that in our current governmental services corporations, including the so-called public schools.
When were you taught that the Reconstruction of our government is still pending?
The Cheats are the men and women whose duty it was to teach you the whole truth, and who instead kept mum.
Liars may also omit crucial information and benefit themselves by their omissions, but they take it a step further and fabricate lies and spin tales and embroider everything, so as to misrepresent what is actual and factual.
People have many reasons for lying --- to benefit themselves, to enrich themselves, to aggrandize themselves, or to avoid punishment or blame, or to protect someone or something else they care about.
The Democratic Political Party has been built on lies since its founding, the most pernicious of which is that they are for "the little guy" and are "friends of the Negroes". Their voting records and history of legislative acts tell a completely different, even opposite, tale.
From an objective standpoint, from someone who doesn't participate in the political party circus, actually and factually, the Democrats have made a Cult of Lying to people in this country and have done so for decades. Lately, they've even taken to lying about their political affiliations, and are running for office as "Independents" and as "Republicans".
Here in Alaska, we've got two such candidates --- Al Gross and Alyce Galvin, both trying to pull the same deceit and run as "Independents" when they've been caught on tape admitting that they consider themselves "progressive" and intend to caucus with the Democrats.
They are doing this because people don't trust Democrats anymore, so the Democrats are relabeling their "product" --- doing a little shimmy-shuffle dance --- and following the Satanist practice of pretending to be their enemies. Thus we have "RINOs" ---- Republicans in Name Only infiltrating and disgracing the Republican Party from within.
These are people like Lisa Murkowski, a Democrat from the Chicago Daley Clan, pretending to be Republicans ---and seeking to redefine the Republican Party to a point wherein there is literally no choice at all and only one party with two labels exists.
These people lie for fun. They lie for sport. They lie for the sheer sake of lying, apparently because they find it so pleasurable and rewarding. They lie and even forget that they are lying.
They get to the point where they believe their own bunk. They become delusional. It starts to surprise them when the rain doesn't fall up.
And of course, it never occurs to them that other people know that they are lying. They somehow think that their spin-doctoring is occurring in a vacuum and that nobody can see what they are doing. So, like Joe Biden, they stand with both hands in the cookie jar, chocolate smears on their mouths, saying, "I didn't take any chocolate chip cookies!"
Despite their age, men like Joe Biden are immature. They've lied all their lives and gotten away with it. All their lives they've been telling Whoppers and because other people were also telling Whoppers, they think it's okay.
The Swamp Dwellers have created what J. Edgar Hoover called, "a culture of lies", and so, this cancerous "culture" has spread until merely telling the truth -- that Joe Biden is a crook and a bully and a die-hard elitist -- arrives like a thunderbolt.
How can I say that? Because it's true. He is. Read his speeches. Look at his friends and political mentors. Look up the videos where he brags about his racketeering and abuse of the power of his political offices.

My Mother wagged her head at me more than once and said: "Never befriend a liar. A man who will lie to you, will lie about you. The truth is not in them, and without the truth they have no moral compass at all. Anything goes. They believe that the ends justify the means. Such people have no sense of decency, no loyalty, no strength, and no shame. They are like reeds in the wind, hollow inside, and blowing their mouths to hear themselves blow."

John Whitehead's Commentary

The Federal Coup to Overthrow the States and Nix the 10th Amendment Is Underway [SHORT]

John Whitehead

I don’t need invitations by the state, state mayors, or state governors, to do our job. We’re going to do that, whether they like us there or not.”—Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf’s defense of the Trump Administration’s deployment of militarized federal police to address civil unrest in the states

This is a wake-up call.

What is unfolding before our very eyes—with police agencies defying local governments in order to tap into the power of federal militarized troops in order to put down domestic unrest—could very quickly snowball into an act of aggression against the states, a coup by armed, militarized agents of the federal government.

At a minimum, this is an attack on the Tenth Amendment, which affirms the sovereignty of the states and the citizenry, and the right of the states to stand as a bulwark against overreach and power grabs by the federal government.

If you’re still deluding yourself into believing that this thinly-veiled exercise in martial law is anything other than an attempt to bulldoze what remains of the Constitution and reinforce the iron-fisted rule of the police state, you need to stop drinking the Kool-Aid.

Work and Blessing

 By Anna Von Reitz

My Son was born many years after my Father died, so he often asks for information about the enigmatic past, and I struggle to explain both the man and the vanished world he belonged to.

Dad was a Big City kid.  He grew up in Chicago, Illinois, and he loved the finer things of life --- symphony music, opera, French perfume for his wife. Yet, after the Second World War, he came to live on a dairy farm in Wisconsin.

This new life required him to get up at 4 o'clock every morning and begin the extremely arduous labor of taking care of feeding, watering, and milking and then mucking out for forty dairy cows.  Fortunately, Dad loved animals and the animals loved him.

Two and a half hours later, 6:30 precisely, he was down the road to his Day Job and an eight hour shift of various kinds of construction and design work before he came home in the late afternoon and began the entire round of milking and caring for cows again.

In between, he managed to till and fertilize and plant the farm fields, maintain and harvest the orchard, and care for the bee colonies in the apiary.  He was lucky to get an hour before bed to read or listen to his beloved phonograph, and the next day it all began again.

My Grandmother worked as hard in her own way as he did.  She was up at the same time, only her tasks were different.  She had the laundry and the bread-baking and the breakfast making to do. She raised the truck garden, five acres of vegetables and berries to feed the family and leave produce to sell or trade to the neighbors.  Anyone who ever raised a backyard garden knows what a challenging task five acres of truck garden is for one woman.

Everyone worked and everyone worked hard.  Everyone helped the others.  We all "pulled the sledge" in the winter, bringing new loads of firewood up the long slope to the back door of the farmhouse.  Everyone watched the weather. Everyone kept an eye out for chicken hawks.

The Work Ethic involved would stop most people today stone dead in their tracks. We're mostly all fat and lazy from three generations of electrical gadgets and gasoline engines, fast food, sugar, and grease.  It wasn't always like that.

People used to do enough physical work to be physically fit without paying dues to a health club.

My Father never bulked up muscle like Arnie Schwarznegger; but, he was the kind of powerhouse that could pick up the back of a car and just hold it suspended while another guy changed the tire.  His muscles were long and thin like spun steel cables and his reflexes were better than a cat.

To this day, I can glance at a man and know instantly if his muscles come from working or from a spa.  I can tell the same thing from a man's hands. And I always have more respect for those who have worked and who do know what work is, because work -- actual work -- grounds us to reality.

Work makes us aware of our limits, as Clint Eastwood's character, Dirty Harry, used to say.  Work brings forward our capabilities.  It teaches us who we are and what we can best contribute, what we love, what we hate, and what matters. Work is not only noble in itself, it makes us noble when we accept its challenges and embrace its rewards.

My Father, a typical German, used to say that it doesn't matter what work you do, only how well you do it and the spirit with which you do it.

I can still see him mucking out the cow barn in the early morning.  To him, that manure was "gold for the garden" and it didn't bother him at all to shovel it. He didn't find any kind of work to be demeaning.  His spirit could stand above it as effortlessly as a lark ascending, but I think he was happiest in the moments he got to spend in his workshop, building things.

In his hands, a wood plane became an instrument of precision and grace.  In his hands, a grinding wheel achieved the edges that grindstones dream of.  There is a "zen" that happens between a true workman and his tools, an effortless and joyous knowing and of being in the moment of creation, when time seems to stop, and there is only the flow of the vision taking shape. Those were, I think, the moments he enjoyed most of all.

So today, the workmen I hire to build and repair things here at my home are astonished to find that I know about tools and have tools --- and can use them myself. I know the processes of labor and the order of things. I know when men are truly skilled at their work, and when they are bluffing.  I know when they have drinking problems and when they are slacking.  I can calculate a roof pitch.  And for some reason, they are always amazed that I would put on a pair of old sneakers and ratty sweatpants and slather paint on walls.

Work, physical work, makes us better people.  It teaches us to properly value the work and skills of others.  It humbles us.  It attaches us firmly to planet earth, the facts of life, and meaning of our lives.  It gives us satisfaction that can come to us in no other way.  It provides us the means to thrive and to challenge ourselves, to create, to care-take, and to join in that slipstream of creativity that gives life to us all.

So whatever your work is, take pride in it today.  Remember that it is important and that you hold the keys to making it fulfilling.  It's your life and your work is a vital part of your life.  Join me in remembering my Father, a man who never turned his back on any task that needed to be done, no matter how humble.

Crimes against Humanity

Eighteenth Sunday After Pentecost

 Rev. Fr. Leonard Goffine's

The Church's Year

At the Introit of the Mass the Church prays for the peace which God has promised by His prophets:

INTROIT Give peace, O Lord, to them that patiently wait for thee, that thy prophets may be found faithful: hear the prayers of thy servant, and of thy people Israel. (Ecclus. XXXVI. 18.) I rejoiced at the things that were said to me: we shall go into the house of the Lord. (Ps. CXXI. 1.) Glory etc.

COLLECT O Lord, inasmuch as without Thee we are not able to please Thee, let Thy merciful pity rule and direct our hearts, we beseech Thee. Thro'.

EPISTLE (I Cor. I. 4-8.) Brethren, I give thanks to my God always for you, for the grace of God that is given you in Christ Jesus, that in all things you are made rich in him, in all utterance and in all knowledge: as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you, so that nothing is wanting to you in any grace, waiting for the manifestation of our Lord Jesus Christ who also will confirm you into the end without crime, in the day of the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

EXPLANATION St. Paul shows in this epistle that he possesses true love for his neighbor, because he rejoices and thanks God that he enriched the Corinthians with different graces and gifts, thus confirming the testimony of Christ in them, so that they could without fear expect His arrival for judgment. - Do thou also rejoice, with St. Paul, for the graces given to thy neighbor, for this is a mark of true charity.

Tenth Sunday After PentecostGOSPEL (Matt. IX. 1-8.) At that time, Jesus entering into a boat, passed over the water, and came into his own city. And behold, they brought to him one sick of the palsy lying in a bed. And Jesus seeing their faith, said to the man sick of the palsy: Be of good heart, son; thy sins are forgiven thee. And behold, some of the Scribes said within themselves: He blasphemeth. And Jesus seeing their thoughts, said: Why do you think evil in your hearts? whether it is easier to say, Thy sins are forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? But that you may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins (then said he to the man sick of the palsy): Arise, take up thy bed, and go into thy house. And he arose, and went into his house. And the multitude seeing it feared, and glorified God who had given such power to men.

EXPLANATIONS

I. Those who brought this sick man to Christ, give us a touching example of how we should take care of the sick and help them according to our ability. Christ was so well pleased with their faith and charity, that He cured the man sick of the palsy, and forgave him his sins. Hence we learn how we might assist many who are diseased in their soul, if we would lead them to God by confiding prayer, by urgent admonitions, or by good example.

II. Christ did not heal the man sick of the palsy until He had forgiven him his sins, by this He wished to teach us, that sins are often the cause of sicknesses and other evils, by which we are visited, and which God would remove from us if we were truly repentant. This doctrine Jesus confirmed, when He said to the man, who had been sick for thirty-eight years: Sin no more, lest some worse thing happen to thee. (John V. 14.) Would that this were considered by those who so often impetuously demand of God to be freed from their evils, but do not intend to free themselves from their sins, which are the cause of these evils, by a sincere repentance.

III. "He blasphemeth." Thus thought the Jews, in their perverted hearts, of Christ, because they believed that He in remitting the sins of the sick man, usurped the rights of God and thus did Him a great injury; for it is blasphemy to think, say, or do any thing insulting to God or His saints. But these Jews did not consider that they by their rash judgment calumniated God, since they blasphemed Christ who by healing the sick man, and by numerous other works had clearly proved His God-head. If Christ so severely reprimanded the Jews, who would not recognize Him as God, for a blasphemous thought against Him, what will He do with those Christians who, though they wish to be adorers of God and His Son, nevertheless, utter blasphemies, curses, and profanations of the holy Sacraments?

IV. When Jesus saw their thoughts, He said: Why do you think evil in your hearts? This may be taken to heart by those who think that thoughts are free from scrutiny, and who never think to confess their evil and shameful thoughts. God; the most Holy and most just, will, nevertheless, not leave a voluntary unchaste, proud, angry, revengeful, envious thought unpunished, any more than an idle word. (Matt, XII. 36.) The best remedy against evil thoughts would be the recollection that God who searches the heart sees them, and will punish them.

PRAYER How great, O Jesus! is Thy love and mercy towards poor sinners, since Thou not only forgavest the sins of the man sick of palsy, but calling him son, didst console and heal him! This Thy love encourages me to beg of Thee the grace, that we may rise from our bed of sins by true penance, amend our life, and through the ways of Thy commandments enter the house of eternal happiness.

INSTRUCTION ON INDULGENCES

Be of good heart, son, thy sins are forgiven thee. (Matt. IX. 2.)

The same that Christ says to the man sick of the palsy, the priest says to every contrite sinner in the confessional, and thus remits the crime or the guilt of his sins, and the eternal punishment, by virtue of the authority given him by God. But since sins not only bring with them guilt and eternal punishment, but also temporal1 and indeed spiritual or supernatural punishment, such as, painful conditions of the soul, as well in this world as in purgatory, and natural ones, as: poverty, disease, all sorts of adversities and accidents, we should endeavor to liberate ourselves from them by means of indulgences.

What is an indulgence?

It is a total or partial remission of the temporal punishment which man would have to suffer either in this or the next life, after the sins have been remitted.

How do we know that after the remission of the sins there still remains temporal punishment?

From holy Scripture; for our first parents after the forgiveness of their sin, were still afflicted with temporal punishment. (Gen. III.) God likewise forgave the sins of the children of Israel, who murmured so often against Him in the desert, but not their punishment, for He excluded them from the Promised Land, and caused them to die in the desert. (Num. XIV.) Moses and Aaron experienced the same, on account of a slight want of confidence in God. (Num. XX. 12., Deut. XXXII. 51. 52.) David, indeed, received pardon from God through the Prophet Nathan for adultery and murder, (II Kings XII.) still he had to endure heavy temporal punishment. Finally, faith teaches us, that we are tortured in purgatory for our sins, until we have paid the last farthing. (Matt. V. 26.)

Did the Church always agree with this doctrine of Scripture?

Yes; for she always taught, that by the Sacrament of Penance the guilt and eternal punishment, due to sin, are indeed forgiven for the sake of the infinite merits of Jesus, but that temporal punishment still remains, for which the sinner must do penance. Even in the earliest ages she imposed great penances upon sinners for their sins which were already forgiven. For instance, murder or adultery was punished by a penance of twenty years; perjury, eleven; fornication, denial of faith or fortune-telling, by seven years of severe penance with fasting, etc. During this time it was not allowed to travel, except on foot, to be present at the holy Sacrifice of the Mass, or to receive the holy Eucharist. If the penitents showed a great zeal for penance and sincere amendment, or if distinguished members of the Church, particularly martyrs, interceded for them, the bishops granted them an indulgence, that is, they remitted the remaining punishment either totally or partially. In our days, on account of the weakness of the faithful, the Church is lenient. Besides the ecclesiastical, the spiritual punishments which would have to be suffered either here or in purgatory for the taking away of sins, are shortened and mitigated by indulgences through tzhe treasure of the communion of saints.

Has the Church the power to remit temporal punishments, or to grant indulgences?

The Council of Trent expressly states, that the Church has power to grant indulgences, (Sess. 25.) and this statement it supports by the words of Christ. For as Christ protests: Amen, I say to you, whatsoever you shall bind upon earth, shall be bound also in heaven; so He also promised, that whatever the Church looses upon earth, is ratified and loosed in heaven. Whatsoever you shall loose upon earth, shall be loosed also in heaven. (Matt. XVIII. 18.) Even an apostle granted an indulgence. In the person and by the power of Christ, that his spirit might be saved in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ, (II Cor. II. 10.; I Cor. V. 4. 5.) St. Paul forgave the incestuous Corinthian, upon whom he had imposed a heavy punishment.

What is meant by saying, indulgences are granted out of the treasury of the saints or of the Church?

By this is meant that God, by the Church, remits the temporal punishment due to sin for the sake of the merits of Christ and the saints, and supplies, as it were, by these merits what is still wanting in our satisfaction.

What kinds of indulgences are there?

Two; plenary and partial indulgences. A plenary indulgence, if rightly gained, remits all ecclesiastical and temporal punishment, which we would otherwise have to expiate by penance. A partial indulgence, however, remits only so many days or years of the temporal punishment, as, according to the penitential code of the primitive ages of the Church; the sinner would have been obliged to spend in severe penance. Hence the name forty day's indulgence, etc.

What is a Jubilee?2

It is a plenary indulgence, which the pope grants to the faithful of the entire world, whereby all the temporal punishments of sin, even in cases reserved to the pope or the bishops, are remitted, and forgiven in the name of God, if the sinner confesses contritely and receives the holy Eucharist and has a firm purpose of doing penance.

What is required to gain an indulgence?

First, that we should be in the state of grace, and have already obtained, by true repentance, forgiveness of those sins, the temporal punishment of which is to be remitted by the indulgence; and secondly, that we should exactly perform the good works prescribed for the gaining of the indulgence.

Do indulgences free us from performing works of penance?

By no means: for there are few in the proper state to receive a plenary indulgence in its fulness, since not only purity of soul is necessary but also the inclination to sin must be rooted out, it therefore cannot be the intention of the Church to free us from all works of penance by granting us indulgences. She cannot act contrary to the word of Jesus: Unless you do penance, you shall all likewise perish. Luke XIII. 3.) She rather wishes to assist our weakness, to supply our inability to do the required penance, and to contribute what is wanting in our penance, by applying the satisfaction of Christ and the saints to us by indulgences. If we, therefore, do not wish to do penance for our own sins, we shall have no part in the merits of others by indulgences.

Can indulgences be gained for the souls of the faithful departed?

Yes, by way of suffrage, so far as we comply with the required conditions, and thus beg of God, for the merits of His Son and the saints, to release the souls in purgatory. Whether God receive this petition or not, remains with Him, He will act only according to the condition of the deceased. We must, therefore, not depend upon the indulgences and good works which may be performed for us after death, but rather endeavor, during our life-time, to secure our salvation by leading a pious life; by our own good works and by the gaining of indulgences.

What follows from the doctrine of the Church concerning indulgences?

That an indulgence is no grant or license to commit sin, as the enemies of the Church falsely assert; that an indulgence grants no forgiveness of sins past or future, much less is permission given to commit sin; that no Catholic can believe that by gaining indulgences he is released from penance, or other good works, free from the fight with his evil inclinations, passions and habits, from compensating for injuries, repairing scandals, from retrieving neglected good, and glorifying God by works and sufferings; but that indulgences give nothing else than partial or total remission of temporal punishment; that they remind us of our weakness and lukewarmness which is great when compared with the zeal and fervor of the early Christians; that they impel us to satisfy the justice of God according to our ability. Finally, they remind us to thank God continually that He gave the Church a means in the inexhaustible treasure of the merits of Christ and His saints, to help our weakness and to supply what is wanting in our penance.

2. The word jubilee signifies deliverance, remittance. With the Jews every fiftieth year was so called, and all the prisoners and slaves were to be set free in this year, according to the command of God, the inheritances which had been sold, restored to their masters, the debts cancelled, and the earth left untilled. This was a year of grace and rest for the Jews. This Jubilee of the Jews is a figure of the Catholic jubilee, in which the captives of sin and Satan are liberated, the debt of sin remitted, and the inheritance of heaven, which the sinner had sold to Satan, is restored to him.
