What does it mean to be "Born Again"?

From the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ: John 3, 1-15

"At that time, There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. This man came to Jesus by night; and said to Him, Rabbi, we know that Thou art come, a teacher from God; for no man can do these signs which Thou dost, unless God be with him. Jesus answered and said to him, Amen, amen, I say to thee, unless a man be born again, he can not see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus said the Him, How can a man be born again, when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb, and be born again? Jesus answered, Amen, amen, I say to thee, unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he can not enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh, is flesh; and that which is born of the spirit, is spirit. Wonder not that  I said to thee, You must be born again. The Spirit breatheth where He will; and thou hearest His voice, but thou knowest not whence He cometh, nor whither He goeth; so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Nicodemus answered and said to Him, How can these things be done?
Jesus answered, and said to him, Art thou a master in Israel, and knowest not these things? Amen, amen I say to thee, that we speak what we know, and we testify what we have seen, and you receive not our testimony. If I have spoken to you earthly things, and you believe not; how will you believe if I shall speak to you heavenly things? And no man hath ascended into heaven, but He that descended from heaven, the Son of man Who is in heaven.  And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of man be lifted up; that whosever believeth in Him may not perish but may have life everlasting."

So this song is more about the freedom to find the truth. Only in America have men been free to find the truth while working out their salvation in peace and liberty. When men use liberty and freedom as a "cloak for malice" instead of a means to improve and to live a better and more moral life, then God must do something to correct His children.  Like Saint Paul, who thought he was right to persecute God's Church, and when he was knocked from his saddle, and made blind, immediately became converted and said "Lord what would you have me do?"  We should also realize that all of what is happening to our beloved country is happening because God wants us to wake up, and live rightly, and sanctify ourselves in the struggle for His truth. God is the author of freedom, as he is the author of original human nature itself. We suffer because of sin and we have an opportunity like the King of Nineve, to do pennance and turn away God's wrath from our Nation.
Perhaps by our lives we can prove to God that we are once again worthy of Freedom, and that we really will follow His Holy Will and be born again in His Spirit.
I don't know about you, but when I listened to the song above it brought all these things to my mind, and reminded me of my own shortcomings, and how I can live a better life and set a better example. I cried about that, and I don't cry about much. I hope this song gives you some hope, and insight into what all these trials are really about. They are about the salvation of souls eternally. They are about an opportunity to do pennance and turn away God's wrath from our nation, and about bringing us to eternal life.
